The Project at a Glance
The Client: Electra Consumer Products – the Sauter kitchen appliance brand.
The Goal: Rebranding the packaging line for small electrical appliances to project luxury, justify a retail price increase, and boost sales volume.
The Deliverables: A revolutionary visual language for over 100 different products, development of a unique photographic concept, and the integration of premium print finishes. Later, expanding the language to the luxury Sauter Pro and Sauter Chef Edition lines.
Location: Leading retail chains and electronics stores across Israel.
The Challenge: From "Looks Like Death" to a Highly Desired Premium Product
Sauter is a well-established, high-quality home appliance brand. While their large appliances (ovens, stoves) are sold without display packaging, the small kitchen appliances line suffered from severe visibility issues. The existing boxes were black, visually cluttered, and simply looked bad - so much so that the new marketing manager bluntly described them as "looking like death."
The challenge was clear: the products themselves were excellent, but their shelf presence was hurting sales. The objective was to create a visual transformation that would rebrand the product line as premium, allow the brand to charge a higher price point, and overcome production challenges with international suppliers in China who were unaccustomed to such strict photographic demands.
Our Strategy: Visual Differentiation and Consumer Psychology
We decided to break the familiar molds of the electrical appliance market and create a graphic language that had never been seen before. The strategy was based purely on consumer psychology: packaging isn't just meant to "protect the product on the way home"; it must communicate luxury, cleanliness, and trust. We knew that if the customer felt they were making a "safe", high-quality purchase from the very first glance at the shelf, their price sensitivity would drop, and they would be willing to pay more for the brand.
The Execution: A Revolutionary Grid, Silver Foil, and Special Editions
We designed a completely new graphic language that was gradually applied to over 100 different products. We meticulously crafted every detail to generate a "WOW" effect:
-
A Unique Shelf Grid: We divided the front of the packaging in an unconventional way. 3/4 of the space was dedicated to a giant close-up photo of the product from an artistic, unusual angle. The remaining 1/4 featured the logo at the top and a clean, straight-on photo of the product with its name at the bottom.
-
Typography and Print Finishes: We utilized clean, minimalist typography. Furthermore, we insisted on integrating a silver hot foil stamp for the logo. This metallic shine significantly elevated the luxurious feel of the cardboard box.
-
Elite Series: Following the initial success, we expanded the design language to the more expensive premium series - Sauter Pro and Sauter Chef Edition. For these, we introduced appetizing food and atmospheric imagery to the minimalist concept, enhancing the culinary experience and justifying an even higher premium price tag.
The Results on the Ground
The commercial impact was immediate and overwhelming. As soon as the new packaging hit the stores, Electra raised the retail prices of the products - and yet, defying basic economic logic, sales skyrocketed significantly!
But the success didn't stop at the cash register; the design created massive waves in the industry. Sometime later, we met a senior colleague from the appliance sector who admitted that the new Sauter packaging set a completely new standard, directly influencing competitor packaging designs even on a global scale.
Igor's Pro Tip:
"You simply cannot overstate the importance of packaging visibility, regardless of the industry. The packaging is essentially the customer's psychological insurance policy. Once the packaging projects confidence and professionalism, the customer feels it's a 'safe' purchase. When the customer feels safe, price becomes secondary, and they are willing to pay a premium for the exact same product."
